The name "Son of David" is a Messianic title. Jesus was the long-awaited deliverer from slavery, oppression, and bondage and the fulfilment of the Old Testament prophecies.
In the first chapter of Matthew's gospel, he outlines that Jesus, in His humanity, was a direct descendant of Abraham and David through Joseph, Jesus earthly father. The family line traced in Luke's gospel follows Jesus' family through His mother, Mary.
This means that Jesus is an heir of David by adoption through Joseph and by blood through Mary. For the Jews who were looking to their deliverer as the Son of David, knowing the lineage of Jesus helped them understand that he was the fulfilment of their hope.
From the very beginning, God had a plan, and it has unfurled throughout history. God's nature, his principles and his plan for humankind are shown to us in scripture. If we work our way through the lineage of Jesus, we also find that there are the most unexpected people in his family line. These include non-Jews, outcasts and those deemed unqualified by the religious elite. No matter how we identify in society, Jesus will not cast us aside based on our past or family line.
