Prayer Focus

The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. Proverbs 11:25

Our natural mind immediately begins to say, ‘How can I prosper if I give away that which I have?’ One of the most amazing principles in the Bible is that of Generosity, one which cannot be understood with natural thinking because it is a spiritual principle from a generous God.

When we think of God the creator of the universe and how He lavished upon His creation Man everything that was needed, we recognise that the very life of God; the raw essence of God Himself is embedded in the principle of generosity.

The Jewish publications Bible translate Proverbs 11:25 . . . . . . The beneficent soul shall be made rich, and he that satisfies abundantly shall be satisfied also himself.

This verse is not just about financial wealth or the act of generosity but about building the lifestyle character and quality of a liberal person. The beneficent soul; the person who is kindly in actions and purpose; who is continuously doing good or causing good to be done, is the one who will be made rich or to prosper. The word ‘prosper’ or ‘made fat’ as it is in the original Hebrew is an all encompassing term meaning to be abundantly supplied in every area, to prosper in our natural life and to be rich spiritually as well.

We are called as believers to honour the Lord with our possessions and with the first fruit of all our increase (Proverbs 3:9) so that abundance will flow. We are encouraged to be people who take hold of the life giving, Holy Spirit inspired principle of generosity; using our time, our energy, our natural talents and abilities, our creative intelligence and resourcefulness, our God given emotions and passion and yes our finances to honour the Lord by blessing others. When we satisfy the needs of others we trigger the life-flow of God’s generous nature.

2 Corinthians 9:6-11 tells us that God’s people will be blessed and prosper to the same extent that we bless and prosper others. We are to be purposeful in our actions, not out of some religious duty or misguided compulsion but out of a generous heart. God takes what you sow and increases the fruit, and you are enriched.

The King James Version renders the second half of our key text as ‘he who waters will also be watered himself’ and immediately brings to mind the concept of a flowing fountain. God has an inexhaustible reservoir of His beneficial abundance available but the key to tapping into that source is unstopping the fountain head in our own lives.

Isaiah 32:8 reads, ‘A generous man devises generous things, and by generosity he shall stand.’ The person who has the heart of God the Father is one who consults, contrives, and delivers generous things that demonstrate the grace and goodness of God; he is made free by the Holy Spirit, and as he has freely received, he will freely give, without any selfish or mercenary agenda. By his lifestyle of generosity that person be established before God as one who will allow the river of God’s blessing to flow unimpeded through their lives.

As we focus our prayer this week, for our Pastors, our leaders our families our friends, and our community let us pray that God’s great principle of Generosity will flow through our lives, touching those around us with the unending abundance of our majestic King and Saviour Jesus Christ; that you and I will choose to be the free flowing fountain head of God’s unstoppable blessing.

God’s richest Blessings.

David Morrison.
